Many of you will have stayed at and enjoyed the magic of Ndutu Safari Lodge and its captivating wildlife and landscapes over the last 50 years. Many of you will also have experienced your first safari staying at our lodge and no doubt enjoyed first-hand the majestic lions, predators and the great migration which are famed in the region.
As everyone knows, the world is in crisis, however in the West we are lucky to have welfare support at times like this. Tanzania does not have such luxuries and we are fearful that when the peak of the COVID-19 virus properly hits the country the effects may be truly devastating both to its communities and potentially its wildlife. What is sure at the moment is that due to COVID-19 the tourism industry has collapsed and the repercussions to the livelihoods both directly and indirectly involved in the industry are and will continue to be significant. During these times of uncertainty for Tanzania like many we want to do what we can to support our staff, the wider community of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and in turn help look after its wildlife.
We have therefore decided to take action and team up with our longstanding conservation partner KopeLion who have worked with the local Maasai communities to protect Ndutu’s lions and worked hard to reduce human wildlife conflict over the past 9 years.
Our aim is to enable our highly trained and effective staff from Ndutu Safari Lodge to work with and support the efforts on the ground of KopeLion and the surrounding communities in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. We are hoping to raise funds which will go directly to KopeLion who will manage the resources and staff from Ndutu Safari Lodge to best effect in the region. To give you an idea of key projects we are looking to support:
HEALTH EDUCATION - Community outreach working with local Maasai, Barabaig, and/or Hadza communities to share fact-based information on COVID-19 and how to prevent the spread of it COVID-19 through personal hygiene, social distancing, and related strategies.
HOSPITAL SUPPORT - Supporting Endulen hospital (our local hospital), as needed.
DRIVERS AND VEHICLES - Providing a supplementary local transport service to assist with information outreach and the distribution of materials to prevent the spread of COVID-19 (e.g., tippy-taps, facemasks).
PROTECT LION POPULATIONS - Securing KopeLion’s Ilchokuti Programme specifically in the Ndutu/Masek area to continue their work to protect the existing lion populations.
AVOID CONFLICT - Reducing human wildlife conflict incidents to protect the livestock of local pastoralists, their sole income generator.
OPERATIONAL SUPPORT - Supplementing of vehicles and fuel and supporting routine vehicle and equipment maintenance efforts.
ADMINISTRATIVE SUPPORT – Ndutu’s capable lodge management team will provide administrative support to the ongoing conservation operations where they can.
Beyond these core projects any funds raised will also be used for ad hoc urgent projects which will be occurring as the pandemic develops in the region or KopeLion’s primary purpose of promoting human-lion coexistence in the NCA. For example;
$50 will help us to share fact-based information on Covid-19 to 5 families together with tools for keeping safe e.g. tippy taps, soap and face masks.
$250 will provide a vehicle and driver for 1 week to reach local communities.
$4,000 will protect the Ndutu lions for 1 month.
Any donation, no matter the amount, will be hugely beneficial and greatly received.
Keep safe and well.
Thank you in advance for your kind support.
