Like many people I have throughout my life peripherally known others who have thought about, attempted or committed suicide but my reaction was always one of disbelief - how could they do that to their family? In April of this year, my son who was at the time a freshman in college called to tell me that one of the RAs on his floor had committed suicide in her room that day. I found myself scrambling to make sure my son who is 2500 miles away in school understands that nothing is so big and bad that we cannot figure it out together rather than choosing to take your own life. He told me that he knows but my thought was that she probably knew that as well, until she didn't. When I learned about LIPF.org and their mission, it hit home that this was something I wanted to support, so that we all know how to help prevent and talk about suicide before we lose more people we love.
