Nantucket Lighthouse School is a community of children, families and educators that embodies the joy of learning. Now in our twentieth year, we offer a very different education from the status quo. With class sizes no larger than twelve, our talented and dedicated teachers individualize their approach for a variety of learners, offer project-based learning, and successfully implement a strong social-emotional component to the academic curriculum so our students thrive.
A generous donor, who wishes to remain anonymous, has offered us challenge grant of $100,000 if we can match their gift by September 1st. Our community of families, faculty, and Trustees has committed to engage in grassroots fundraising this summer to raise $50,000 towards the challenge. The remaining $50,000 we will be raising from our broader Nantucket community.
Thank you for helping us meet our goal!
So, here's the thing. The wonder of math is everywhere. Patterns, sequences, groupings and symmetries fill the natural and man-made worlds. I start teaching counting numbers with fingers, toes and gnomes. I teach perimeter and area by having the kids make clothing for bears. I use a variation of Python code to teach the kids how to make their own iPhone game. I've not yet met a kid who isn't excited to play with numbers. And once it's play, you can teach them anything. That's what I love about Nantucket Lighthouse School. As a teacher, I am free to teach according to each student's need. A kid who is out in nature, counting and seeing patterns learns so much more, because it's real to them, and wondrous. Please give what you can to keep this amazing environment going, for the kids. And, if you private message me your address, I'll send you a tiny Baby Yoda I needle-felted as a thank you for you gift.
