If you are looking at this page, we have probably spent some time together with me, which means you've heard about North Star Reach. I throw out phrases like "camp magic", "mooseness", and "repeat after me song" like everyone already knows those terms, but if you don't I am here to tell you more:
The mission of North Star Reach is to provide life-changing camp experiences for children with serious health challenges and their families, free of charge. On the surface it is already amazing, but this organization does so much more than that. North Star Reach changes every person who comes to camp for the better. Whether you are volunteer who learns valuable life skills, a parent seeing their child blossom into a new person, or a camper who finally can have a spectacularly average experience. At camp an illness does not define your story- your community does.
We are currently in a time when need is great throughout the world. There are many people that are finding not-so-new normals that are uncomfortable and unsettling, so the needs of camp may not be top of mind- but I am here to tell you that they are essential to the development of those who benefit from camp, and they are in great need of support. The children that typically come to North Star Reach are often immune-compromised, which means "safely distancing" will last a lot longer for these families. NSR has been dedicated to supporting these families and campers with virtual programming while we are all in our homes, as well as creating community in an online space. We also want camp to be available to these kiddos when we can finally come together again- but to ensure that we need support like yours.
I have volunteered with North Star Reach for nearly eight years, and I can say I am a better person for it. Leading camp songs and cheers has made me more confident and able to speak in public. Hearing the stories campers have shared has made me more empathetic. Changing plans at the last moment has made me more creative. If camp has done this much for me, imagine what it does for our campers.
North Star Reach is silly, loud, messy, and magical- but it is also so important. Every single dollar makes a difference to camps success, and it would mean the world to me if you would support this amazing place.
Love the mooseness, Mon
