In 2015, my mom, Liz Walsh, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer at age 73. She died at home a year later. My mom was a teacher of special education, a volunteer for Big Brother, Big Sister, and a volunteer at local hospitals, where she did arts projects with children hospitalized with serious and terminal illnesses. Right before her diagnosis, she and my father had booked their second trip to Alaska. She was a talented and enthusiastic artist and craftsperson and much loved by her 5 grandchildren. I walk so that other grandmothers and grandfathers can watch their grandchildren grow up, volunteer to help others, and go on adventures to new and favorite places.
