It's Different this Time...But Better
It struck me suddenly this summer. I wanted to run a marathon. For those who know me well, running is a passion. In the past, I followed this passion by running in a number of marathons. My last one was nearly ten years ago and since then I haven't had the motivation to run another, until now. Before it was about me and my personal goals. Now it's about my son and all the other children and adults who may be considered "different". We received Conner's autism spectrum diagnosis when he was 4 (he's now 5). Since that time, I have met the most amazing people who are on the spectrum or have family members who are. There are a great number of resources available to these unique individuals, but it can still be difficult for them and their families. So, I am running for an organization that provides incredible support to those who are transitioning to adulthood and beginning their future of living independent lives. TILL (Toward Independent Living and Learning) is an awesome organization that I discovered after learning Conner's diagnosis.
TILL, a nonprofit human service agency based in Dedham, Massachusetts, works with individuals and families to create meaningful lives, connected to one's community and all that it has to offer, through individualized residential, vocational, therapeutic, and support service opportunities.
As part of their continuum of supports for children and adults with autism diagnosis, TILL's Autism Support Center provides services to children and adults with and without intellectual disabilities, and their families. It provides resources, training and support, and individualized coaching, life skills training and other options as the person transitions into adult services.
TILL also helps foster all-important social connections. Springboard is a unique social membership club for teens and adults with learning differences, Asperger's syndrome and other social support needs. Education through Travel (ETT) offers opportunities to gain interpersonal and social skills through supported travel.
And sports: TILL offers inclusive sports for people of all abilities - bowling, softball, soccer and TRACK! In September, they held their 25th Annual TILL Games at the Reggie Lewis Athletic Complex, with events for everyone: baby crawl, youth races, short distance and mile run, assisted walking, manual and powered wheelchair events and 400x400 relay.
I cannot express how happy I am to represent TILL in the Philadelphia Marathon on 11/24/19. Please consider supporting this amazing organization.
