At the Museum of Chinese in America (MOCA), a national cultural institution that tells the untold stories in the making of America through the lens of the Chinese immigrant experience, visitors are greeted with the Chinese proverb: “*A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.*” It is our way of honoring the pioneering spirit of not only Chinese immigrants but all immigrants who sacrificed and dared to take the first step that blazed a path for future generations in America.
On behalf of Gregory P. Ho, Co-Captain and MOCA Trustee, and Yue Ma, Co-Captain and MOCA's Director of Collections, MOCA welcomes you to join us as an official charity runner at the 50th anniversary of the TCS NYC Marathon on November 1, 2020!
In early May, MOCA received a major update from New York Road Runners (NYRR). We would like to share the update with you, and hope you will join our marathon effort in celebration of the 40th anniversary of the Museum.
NYRR announced that the 2020 TCS New York City Marathon is proceeding as planned at this time. They have maintained close contact with government officials and public health experts regarding the safe resumption of NYRR's in-person race schedule. Since March 15, a total of 20 NYRR races have been canceled. As they look ahead to the 18 races remaining on their 2020 schedule, they are exploring alternatives, modifications, and new approaches, all of which must follow government guidelines to ensure the health and safety of runners for any in-person events to return.
Therefore, MOCA will follow NYRR's guidelines and move forward with our marathon initiative. This decision is made with the understanding that MOCA is facing a severe financial burden to survive through summer. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we canceled three major fundraisers: the Celebration of Community Heroes, the Annual Golf Outing, and the Legacy Awards Gala. We also have received no revenue from general admissions, guided tours, rentals, and the MOCA Shop since our temporary closure in March. We hope you will work with us to ensure the survival of MOCA, which has been dealt many blows over the past months.
Most importantly, the health and safety of everyone in our community is our top priority. We understand that some of you may be feeling uncertain over whether to run the TCS NYC Marathon this year. With this in mind, we are allowing our runners to withdraw from the Marathon and the fundraising commitment without a cancellation fee until Monday, June 15, 2020. We also have extended the last withdrawal date from July 1 to August 1, 2020, to be released of the fundraising commitment. To help bring you a small sense of relief, if NYRR decides to cancel the Marathon entirely this year, your guaranteed entry will be honored and transferred to the 2021 TCS New York City Marathon as our first priority. All funds raised by you to that date will be handled under NYRR’s guidelines on its 2020 TCS NYC Marathon charity partnership program.
When you join Team MOCA 40, you'll be claiming a coveted guaranteed entry into the 2020 TCS New York City Marathon and participating in one of the world's premier running events. It's a powerful win-win when your efforts to cross the finish line also enable MOCA to: redefine the American narrative to include the Chinese American experience through art, history, and community. We make nearly 200 years of Chinese American history accessible to the general public, from scholars to young children and from community members to international tourists.
Spots on Team MOCA 40 are limited and allocated on a first-come, first-serve basis. To secure a spot, SIGN UP now.
Please send a brief statement of your interest in joining Team MOCA 40 to firstname.lastname@example.org. We will follow up with detailed information regarding the MOCA 2020 Charity Runner Agreement. We will also share a step-by-step guide for GoFundMe campaign and a customized guideline to suggest tips about how to fundraise during these unprecedented times. We look forward to running with you to cross the finish line at the TCS NYC Marathon on Sunday, November 1!
P.S. If you choose to run outside or even kick off a marathon training plan soon, please follow these health and safety tips from NYRR coaches to ensure that you're protecting yourself and others!
