This is the year...!
I have a BIG MARATHON dream. The dream goes beyond running and completing 26.2 miles with 50,000 other runners in NYC, my DREAM is to help redefine the American narrative and raise $100,000 to start doing just that --!
How, might you ask? Well, read on!
Your support will not only directly support the Museum of Chinese in America (MOCA) in its efforts to highlight forgotten parts of U.S. history through the lens of Chinese Americans but your gift also helps empower other marginalized groups to tell their stories.
In recognition of the 150th anniversary of the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad, MOCA wanted to do the unthinkable. MOCA organized a national effort to gather over 1,500 runners from across the country to run over 150,000 miles while sharing 150 untold stories in the making of America.
MOCA challenges the stereotype that Chinese Americans (and other marganizalied groups) are perpetually foreign. MOCA encourages all Americans to realize two identities--one of their ancestral home and one of their American ancestors, e.g. Chinese Americans.
On a personal note, as you may know I am a workaholic. It seems that I started working when I was 11 (delivering the New York Newsday) and never stopped. MOCA has been my toughest job by far. Running has served as my quiet time to recover from the daily ups and downs of sustaining a non-profit arts and cultural organization where resources are slim, histories are forgotten, and spirits are dampened. Despite serving over 50,000 visitors a year and educating over 20,000 young people, issues ranging from the ramifications of historic immigration policies to exponential growth in China have led to further divisiveness and misunderstanding within MOCA's work. Running has helped me to place one foot in front of the other reminding myself that A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.
In 2019, MOCA celebrates the 150th anniversary of the historic moment when a golden spike was driven into the ground at Promontory Summit in Utah to mark the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad. To commemorate this milestone, MOCA has launched the MOCA Spike 150 initiative to honor the resilience, grit, and ingenuity symbolized by the thousands of laborers — many of whom were of Chinese ancestry — who toiled and gave their lives to build America into the country it is today. This nine-month journey will allow MOCA to tell 150 untold stories in the making of America as participants of MOCA Spike 150 run across the country culminating in the TCS NYC Marathon on November 3, 2019. MOCA welcomes you to join us in this unprecedented initiative, and welcomes runners to follow in the footsteps of this country’s first pioneers and make history.
