Hey guys! I’m going to do my best to keep this short, but my efforts may prove to be futile. Recently I decided I wanted to be more active and decided I was going to start training for a marathon. I began using Hal Higdon’s Novice I marathon training program at the beginning of July and have just completed week 4/18. The race I will be participating in is the City of Oaks Marathon in Raleigh, NC on Nov. 3rd. It’s been a fun journey so far and I’m excited for the next 14 weeks of training, but that’s not the reason for this post.
I was fortunate enough to make some new friends over the last month who brought up the idea of running for a cause. I was initially hesitant of this at first because everyone knows people can be obnoxious about their health via social media and in person, as I’m sure I already have been to some. You know who you are (coworkers). However, they explained to me the benefits and positive impact running for a cause could provide to a non-profit organization. I’m already putting in the effort to train for an extended period of time, why not do some good with my time as well? With their continued encouragement, I realized this was something I should focus my efforts into and decided to do a little research.
I stumbled upon an app, Charity Miles, which turns walking, running, biking, or any other human-centered activity into earned money for charity. So far their members have earned over $2.5 million to charity! I have selected Stand Up To Cancer as the charity I will be running for while I train. Unfortunately, cancer has impacted each and everyone one of us at some point in our lives. Stand Up To Cancer enables scientific breakthroughs by funding collaborative, multidisciplinary, multi-institutional scientific research teams and investigators. 100% of donations received from the public support Stand Up To Cancer’s collaborative cancer research programs. This funding eliminates barriers to innovation and brings together scientists and researchers from multiple institutions and disciplines. This research strategy pushes forward big ideas and brings groundbreaking new therapies to patients in record time.
You’re now probably wondering how all of this works, well it’s rather simple! I have created a pledge page based on the number of miles I move. If you want to support me you can pledge a certain amount per mile I earn, as low as 1 cent per mile! I have set my goal at 500 miles for the next 14 weeks, although I already have 60.63 earned as of today. Charity Miles does not collect any money directly, so after my marathon concludes there will be a link I will send out where you can donate directly to Stand Up For Cancer based on the amount accumulated via your pledge per mile. If this is something you are unfamiliar with and would rather donate directly, that’s great too! Below is a link for you to donate directly to Stand Up For Cancer via Crowdrise as well as my pledge page via Charity Miles. The overall goal is to raise awareness and hopefully reach a financial goal of $1,000!
Thank you all in advance for your support in this journey over the next three months! Big shout out to Jon, Natalie, Conrad, Gabby, Katy, and Ashley for getting me to this point in the process, you guys rock! I’m happy to answer any questions you guys may have about Stand Up To Cancer, Crowdrise, Charity Miles, or marathon training in general. Again, thank you for your support and together we can stand up to cancer!
