2020 has not been normal for any of us. I am on my second round of training for the Boston Marathon, with the original plan of running in April and then September. As so many races have, the Boston Marathon has also turned virtual, so I will be running my own race in Kansas City on September 12th. I am grateful to have surpassed my fundraising goal of $150,000 in support of Shatterproof. This will be my second time running in the Boston Marathon all while supporting a cause and organization that I am passionate about. While it won't be the same as going to Boston, I want to show my dedication to those battling addiction as well as to the friends, family and colleagues that have so generously supported me. This pandemic has impacted all of us, and in various ways and continuing to focus efforts on helping those facing addiction has become even more important.
Who is Shatterproof?
Shatterproof is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to ending the devastation addiction causes families. Every dollar raised advances Shatterproof’s advocacy efforts, provides evidence-based resources for families, and helps end the stigma of addiction.
The Shatterproof mission is very important to me. One of my dear friends lost his son, Garrett, to addiction very unexpectedly. April 22nd will mark the 5-year anniversary since Garrett's life ended too soon due to an opiate overdose. Garrett's dad took this tragic loss and turned his energy into figuring out how to help combat addiction so others may not have to face the same loss he did. Check out the video above to hear from Garrett's dad about his involvement with Shatterproof.
Why should you care?
Addiction does not discriminate, most of us have been touched by addiction directly or indirectly and I'm hoping you will consider supporting this cause with me.
What can you do?
Consider making a donation to help me meet my fundraising goal. Whether you give $1,000, $100, or $25, any amount will help change lives. You can also help by sharing this page with your family, friends and on your social media pages.
