Oxnard reports 460 homeless people live on our streets and in our shelters. The majority of these disenfranchised people use bicycles for transportation. Because they often lack adequate resources, their bikes need frequent attention. But they do not have the means or the place to make repairs.
Community Action of Ventura County is a central hub of homeless day services near Oxnard’s downtown area. Bikes and bike parts are everywhere around our facility. Some of our homeless clients know how to fix bikes and others don’t.
Our Community Bicycle Repair Center will offer lessons in bike repair, provide a wide range of bike parts and tools, and organize the work area with ample room to make repairs. Some of our homeless clients will be able to repair their own bikes; others will repair bikes of fellow clients for a fee. Homeless clients who are especially adept at building bikes will actually construct bikes and sell them. This will provide funds for some of our homeless clients.
