I am trying something new this summer and running the Falmouth Road Race this August to raise money for Michael’s Miracle Falmouth Team. The Team is raising money for The Michael Lisnow Respite Center. The Respite Center, located in Hopkinton, Massachusetts is a charity that provides services for children and adults with disabilities. We have several programs which include our Adult Day Program, Weekend Respite, After School Care, Day Care (birth - 3yrs), Employment Support for Individuals with Disabilities and Residential Placements.
The Respite Center is where 2 very strong and determined kids I know have spent time every week for the last year and getting the best possible care and services. Finn and Mack Carlson are 3 year old twin boys who were born very prematurely at 24 weeks and have made incredible strides with all that they have faced. Finn was diagnosed with retinoblastoma at 3 months old during a routine eye check for ROP. During that exam they found a large tumor in his right eye that took up his visual field. About 7 months after first finding the tumor in his right eye, they found multiple tumors in his left eye. It is now in both eyes.
Finn has monthly eye exams under anesthesia. He has had 6 rounds of chemotherapy and gets laser and cryo-treatments to the tumors that are beginning to form. When the laser and cryo are done, it burns the tumor and a piece of his vision away. If it works, chemo does not need to be done. If this treatment plan doesn’t help, we will need to start chemo again. Due to his cancer and treatment, Finn is visually impaired and legally blind although he does still have some vision currently.
To further my connection with Finn and Mack, I met them and their parents when my own son was in the NICU down the hall from them. Mack, Finn, Shannon, and Tim cheered on my son, Peter, during his darkest days. I was lucky to watch Finn and Mack discharge from the NICU after their long stays but their courage got me through the rest of our 6 month stay. Please consider donating to this wonderful cause and if you are in Falmouth August 17 look for me!
