On a personal level, Pride Month has come to be a symbol of how far I have come in my journey out of the closet. Surprisingly, I haven't even been openly gay for 5 years yet! For over two decades the thought of being gay made me feel anxious, ashamed, depressed, embarrassed and fearful. I did not have any openly gay friends and felt like there was no one to turn to.
After coming out my life completely changed. It felt like the largest weight had been lifted off of me, and I could finally be my truest self. At the end of 2017 I reached out to the Human Rights Campaign to see how I could get involved. This organization has transformed my life in more ways than I can count, and has turned strangers into family. Today, I could not be more proud to be a gay man - and I am hopeful we will one day live in a world where nobody has to come out of hiding.
