Mezcla Media Collective is a hub for independent women and non-binary filmmakers of color in Chicago. Our organization’s mission is to provide resources in order to level the playing field, ensuring that women and non-binary filmmakers of color are able to participate in Chicago’s bustling media production scene. Mezcla currently has three tiers of resources offered: hyper-local, knowledge transfer, and career advancement. We partner with stakeholders in the industry who are interested in diversity and inclusion to work with the organization to achieve those goals in a deliberate manner.
Since our founding in 2017, Mezcla has grown to support 500 members throughout Chicagoland with our volunteer-run programming including: monthly meet-ups, feedback screenings, technical workshops and masterclasses on a volunteer basis. We have facilitated dozens of hires across the Chicago film and television history. Mezcla members are producers, cinematographers, directors, screenwriters and video journalists at various stages in their careers; they are self-taught artists and recent graduates of Chicago-area colleges and universities; they are women and non-binary people who are actively taking part in what this midwestern city has to offer.
Our community is already the most marginalized in the industry, while also being the demographic most negatively impacted by COVID-19. Over half of our members surveyed have lost all sources of income, which includes both full-time freelancers and staff that has been laid off. We have reached out to members in our collective and have found that over half have lost an average of nearly $3,000 within the last six weeks of the shelter-in-place thus far, and 25% have dependents. We have several members who have family members diagnosed and are struggling to make ends meet at the same time. With such outstanding circumstances, we decided to use our collective power to attempt to ease the financial burden on our members. We are launching a month-long COVID Relief Crowdfunding Campaign with a goal amount of $15,000. We will then allow Mezcla members to apply for $500 micro-grants of emergency relief throughout May and June. Please consider donating any amount or sharing with your community.
