Governors Island has always been a special place for us. While Merritt works there, Luis has been a dedicated supporter, volunteer and enjoyer of the Island since the very beginning of our relationship.
Merritt talks about Governors Island all the time, but Luis's words about it (written last fall) perfectly summarize both our feelings:
"I first discovered Governors Island 3 years ago. My fiancée took me to what I now believe is a magical place. At first, it was just another destination among all the other wonderful places or parks that NYC has to offer.
I have been back to the Island many times since, close to one hundred times and counting. I have seen the record number of visitors year over year. I have seen the opening of The Hills, its transformation from uninhabitable buildings, mud and dirt to what it has become today, a playground for kids young and old. I have gone down the tallest slide in NYC, I have enjoyed the hammocks, and the amazing views of The Lady from Outlook Hill. I have also volunteered for many programs, my favorite being last year's Pumpkin Patch where I was lucky to see the twinkle in kids’ eyes when they would pick up pumpkins almost as large as themselves, and then they would ask me if they were the "small" pumpkins. Of course, they were always "small," and I sold them at the small pumpkin price.
The Trust for Governors Island and The Friends of Governors Island have performed an outstanding job with their vision and results from it. Today the Island is a place I love to go back to. I cannot recall how many people, local and non-local to NYC I have taken to the Island and shown the magnificent views and unbelievably lush trees, plants and flowers that have been planted there. Nature has done an amazing job in two short years."
Please help us keep Governors Island a vibrant and welcoming place for everyone!
