"In 2013, my husband and I lost our amazing, smart, funny, athletic and beloved son Dan Maxwell to suicide, following 18 months of excruiciating depression. Just after he graduated from high school, he finally couldn't take it any more and gave up. He, like we, were not able to share how are family was suffering with our friends or family members due to stigma. We started DMAX Foundation so that other students and families would no longer have to suffer in silence." (Laurie Burstein-Maxwellm Executive DIrector, DMAX Foundation).
Did you know that in their latest twice per year nationwide survey, the American College Health Association found that during the most recent 12 months:
*Over 60% of students have felt overwhelming anxiety.
*Over 38% of students have felt so depressed that they can not function
*Over 10% have seriously contemplated suicide
Many students don't tell anyone how they are doing, or ask for help, due to stigma, overcrowding at counseling centers and lack of resources. But students want to talk to their peers.
So DMAX Foundation is making a difference in the lives of college students by creating student led mental health related clubs for students to talk with each other about how they are doing, how their friends are doing and how they can help each other...to have Conversations That Matter. The Foundation currently has 3 clubs created...at Elon University, Drexel University and Penn State. The goal is the creation and support of 4-6 DMAX Clubs at Universities in the Philadelphia (and Penn State) area by year end 2018. Help to make the goal a reality.
