Every day, approximately 830 women die as a result of complications during pregnancy and childbirth. That's one woman every two minutes. Worse, the World Health Organization estimated that in 2015, 98% of maternal deaths were preventable. In the U.S. alone, 1 in 3,800 women will die of a pregnancy related cause, giving us the worst maternal mortality rate in the developed world.
Help me change these odds! In September, I will run the Maine Half Marathon in support of Every Mother Counts. EMC is a non-profit dedicated to making pregnancy and childbirth safe for mothers everywhere. They work on four continents training skilled birth attendants, providing obstetric care supplies, and improving access to transportation to and from pre- and post-natal care. Meanwhile, they inspire people like me to keep running, with over 50 team EMC runners in 2017 and over 100,000 miles covered in races since 2010.
As a retired 800 runner, 13.1 miles seems like a long way to go, but many women have difficulty traveling much farther to reach the resources for a safe delivery. Each donation goes directly to reducing the barriers that women face daily when hoping to become mothers. I would be so very grateful if you would consider supporting me and moms around the world!
