In Ukraine, parents of children with special needs are encouraged to hand their children over to state care. They are told their children are a burden on society. Children are sent to institutions where they are subjected to abuse and neglect. There is minimal support available to parents who fight to keep their children with them. Maya's Hope wants to help relieve some of the burden on these amazing parents and assist in keeping children with their families, where they belong.
At the age of two months, Diomid developed a rash on his face and diarrhea up to 15 times a day. Doctors claimed that it was a food allergy. He was completely breastfed, so almost all products were removed from the mother’s diet, but there was no improvement in his condition.
The condition of the child worsened every day. The kid became weak and inactive, stopped gaining weight. Due to a weakened immune system, he was seriously ill with bronchitis and dehydration several times.
When blood appeared in the stool, the parents took the boy to Kyiv. After a complete examination of the intestine: rectoscopy and colonoscopy with a biopsy, an exact diagnosis was finally made - ulcerative colitis.
Diomid spent four months in a children's hospital away from home. IV’s, painful injections and many medications later, the doctors managed to reduce his symptoms significantly. Diomid began to gain weight and improve.
Now the he is a year and three months old. He has learned to crawl and stand. Diomid returned home in stable condition. But to continue to manage his symptoms, he needs expensive medications and special nutrition.
The family is surviving on the income of Diomid’s father. The cost of what Diomid needs every month is almost twice this amount.
They desperately need help to keep their precious son healthy.
