Since 2015, Safari Doctors has been bringing health care to remote and forgotten areas of Lamu county, Kenya. Once a month, the team gets on a boat with medicine and vaccines and visits up to 11 communities, which wait all month to see a doctor and get help.
Safari doctors is the only health care access and community empowerment support that these communities receive. Without their help, children and pregnant women's lives would be at risk. The next step in growing this organization is setting up a medical outpost on the Island of Pate, which will allow these communities access to healthcare all year round. This will transition the supportive care currently provided into preventive care, improving the overall health and cost of each monthly outreach medical trip.
I have committed to raising $10,000 to outfit the medical outpost in Mtangawanda on Pate Island. The outpost is already built with a water well, but needs electricity for it to be functional. $5,000 will be used to purchase a solar system which will provide electricity and run the water pump. This is essential to the success of the outpost. The remaining $5,000 will be used to purchase examinations beds, storage units for medicines, consultation tables and chairs, and much needed medical/laboratory equipment.
