My name is Avelino "Allen" Mercado.
In 2015, I was diagnosed with Stage-4 Soft Tissue Sarcoma on my arm and lungs. According to my oncologist, this disease is incurable, however, because of my faith in God and my belief that it is not His will for any of His children to have any disease, many doors have opened up that allowed me to continue to conquer this dreadful disease.
When I ran my first running event at the 2017 Long Beach Half Marathon in October 2017, my main purpose was to glorify God for what He has done for me and my family and also to raise funds for our church to help a local organization whose mission is to help those in need by providing food, clothing, household necessities, and programming for individuals and families lacking life’s basic essentials.
Since then, I have continued to glorify God by running at the 2017 Los Angeles Cancer Challenge for the Hirschberg Foundation for Pancreatic Research and the 2017 Heroes of Hope Race for Research for The Brad Kaminski Foundation for Brain Tumor Research to raise awareness and support for their cause in finding ways to beat cancer.
On February 4, 2018, I will be running at the 2018 Surf City Half Marathon to raise funds for Medical Mission of Mercy USA.
The Medical Mission of Mercy USA (Philippine American Medical Mission of Metropolitan Washington DC, Inc.), organized in 2001, is a group of individuals from different backgrounds who came together with a common goal of helping those less fortunate. Their mission is to provide free healthcare to the underserved people of the Philippines, United States, and other countries with compassion, concern for comfort, relief of pain and treatment of illness.
Since it's inception in 2001, their family of volunteers have conducted annual medical missions in different provinces in the Philippines and have helped over 45,000 patients through cleft lip and palate surgery, general and gynecologic surgery, minor surgery, dental services and dentures, ophthalmology and optometry services, adult and pediatric medical outpatient care, rehabilitation and wellness services and dispensing large volumes of medications.
They also work closely with the local medical practitioners and health care providers by conducting continuing medical education seminars and training for medical residents and nursing students.
The Medical Mission of Mercy USA has helped various disaster-stricken areas through monetary donations such as the Tsunami victims in Indonesia, Katrina victims in Louisiana and Typhoon and Earthquake victims.
Their 2018 missions will be at Sorsogon and Baler, Philippines in February 2018 and Guatemala in July 2018.
Funding for their annual medical missions rely solely on solicitations and annual fundraising events so I would like to ask all of you to join me in supporting their cause and mission to make a difference in the lives of those who are in need. Our donations will help this organization do its work to help the people in the mission field.

Once again, I could not do this without the help of my God. I will forever glorify Him for giving me the strength to participate at these running events so I can support organizations like Medical Mission of Mercy USA and do my part to make a difference.
Thank you all for your support.
God Bless you all.
