In Ukraine, parents of children with special needs are encouraged to hand their children over to state care. They are told their children are a burden on society. Children are sent to institutions where they are subjected to abuse and neglect. There is minimal support available to parents who fight to keep their children with them. Maya's Hope wants to help relieve some of the burden on these amazing parents and assist in keeping children with their families, where they belong.
Nastya is 8 years old. While she was still in the womb, a "true knot" formed in her umbilical cord which led to hypoxia and hemorrhage in the brain. After birth she spent two weeks in the intensive care unit, two months in the department of neonatal pathology, and was then discharged home with a lot of diagnoses, convulsions, lack of a swallowing and sucking reflex.
In 2016, after another bout of pneumonia, Nastya was given a tracheostomy. Her trach needs constant suctioning to prevent her airways becoming obstructed. Nastya desperately needs a portable suction pump so that she can leave her home to attend doctor and hospital appointments and to go for walks outside in the fresh air. The cost of this pump is US$1000.
Nastya also needs a special stroller to make it easier for her family to take her outside and nutritious formula. To maximize your donation, you can send a check payable to: Maya's Hope 31 West 34th Street #7065, NY, NY 10001
