When I was 14 yrs old I was on a city tour of Boston. Our guide took us to the finish line of the Boston Marathon. As I learned the history of the race, I became intrigued. Little did I know the seed had been planted.
After college I started running 5 and 10Ks almost every weekend. Running a marathon was the next step. I ran my first marathon in 1995 and after several more marathons finally qualified for Boston. The race is run each year on Patriots Day, the 3rd Monday of April. It is a holiday in New England so the crowds are out cheering in force from start to finish. With great admiration, the spectators make you feel like a rock star, which is why I'm honored to now have run the Boston Marathon 16 times, with the last 13 consecutively. My quest is to run 25 consecutive Boston Marathons and become a member of the prestigious Boston Athletic Association Quarter Century Club.
In December 2018, I was hospitalized when I went into respiratory failure. It took almost 2 months before I was finally diagnosed with Lupus. I was able to run/walk Boston 2019 and finish, but unable to get a qualifying time for Boston 2020.
I am honored to have been selected to run for the Team MEB Foundation. The founder, Meb Keflezighi is the only athlete in history to win the New York Marathon, the Boston Marathon, and an Olympic Medal. The foundation promotes the importance of "Maintaining Excellent Balance" in life. The mission is guided by the belief that lessons learned through sports transcend into all aspects of life. The MEB Foundation supports programs and events that inspire youth and their families to lead healthy, balanced lives. The MEB Foundation fulfills its mission as a collaborator and leader in health, education, and fitness.
Yes, it has been quite the challenge trying to manage my Lupus, train for a marathon, and deal with life in general, but with the support of my family and friends, I am confident that I can do this. This legendary race, provider of so much joy and inspiration, has now become my personal vehicle to help others realize their own dreams thanks to the MEB Foundation. Thanks for your encouragement and support.
