Meals On Wheels of Jefferson County Inc and your contribution will make an impact, whether you donate $5 or $500. Every little bit helps. Thank you for your support. I've included information about Meals On Wheels of Jefferson County Inc below.
Anyone in Jefferson County who is homebound or for any reason is unable to prepare at least one healthful, ample meal a day, regardless of age, income, infirmity, race, gender, or circumstances equally important is eligible to receive a noon time meal. Meals on Wheels of Jefferson County (MOWOJC) prepares and delivers 40 to 50 meals a day Monday through Friday. The service meets two essential needs: (1) ensuring our clients receive a healthy, well-balanced daily meal to prevent malnutrition, and (2) monitoring our client’s well-being, and summoning the client’s caregiver of record, or emergency help, if needed. The drivers also bring a little cheer into the client’s lives with a daily visit, since many clients are quite isolated.
The prepared meals are packed by volunteer packers and placed into hot and cold food boxes for delivery. The volunteer drivers and visitor load the food boxes in their vehicles for delivery throughout the county. The county is served via five routes requiring 1 ½ to 2 hours to complete. The MOWOJC driver and visitor monitor their client’s well-being and report back to the MOWOJC program manager any concerns they observed during the delivery. The MOWOJC program manager takes the appropriative action to improve any issues.
Clients are enrolled by referrals from churches, Hospice, DHHR, and other organization catering to seniors and people in Jefferson County who are disabled. Individuals who call for service are interviewed over the phone to provide information about their financial status and physical condition. When necessary a board member makes a site visit. Most of MOWOJC clients are unable to prepare their own meals and would be forced into nursing care or assisted living health facilities if MOWOJC did not provide this low-cost service. This service allows our clients to remain independent and to live as long as possible in their own homes.
Your donation will be used to subsidize the cost of the preparing the meal to keep the fee for the meal at a price clients can afford. Currently clients are charge a fee based on what they feel they can afford to pay. If the clients had to pay the full cost of the meal, the majority of our clients would not qualify for the service. The program is carried out through the efforts of 80 dedicated volunteers, one paid part time cook/kitchen manager, and one paid part time program manager. The program is managed by an all-volunteer board.
