Dear McKinley Community,
The COVID pandemic has hit us in many different ways. Some have lost their jobs and loved ones. Others have had to continue to work, putting themselves at risk in order to secure the safety of others. Some have been able to continue to work from home but under reduced hours and stressful and tentative situations. Through all of this, our children are experiencing our lives in new and often difficult ways.
One of the things that has changed is access to physical books. As a community, we would like for all of our students to have access to a variety of new and changing physical books regardless of how the COVID pandemic has affected them. We don’t know each family’s situation, but are hoping that as a community we can come together to support our children. This is why we are proposing a McKinley Book Bank.
The McKinley Book Bank is a GoFund Me account funded by our community that can be accessed by three local book stores- The Booksmith on Haight, Dog Eared Books in the Mission, and all three Green Apple stores- who have agreed to join us in this effort. Any student at McKinley will be able to order books online and have them delivered to their home from any of these bookstores stores by charging the McKinley Book Bank account. Each family can access the bank as best meets their individual needs.
This is a difficult time for everyone and it affects us all differently - this is what it means to be in community. If you are able to donate to the book bank, or know others outside McKinley who can donate to the book bank, this too is part of being in community. Please give what you can.
Thank you for your support.
