Hi friends and family,
For many of you, it’s been 14 years since you first started receiving news from me about my work with NISGUA in Guatemala. NISGUA continues to be my home for political education, my platform for organizing, and how I put into practice my deeply-held commitment to internationalism.
For this reason, I have a very ambitious goal of raising $4000 (!!) for NISGUA by the end of this month-- just 10 days away!
I’ve taken on many different roles in the organization, from raising awareness about human rights cases, organizing exchanges between activists from the U.S. and Guatemala, and leading our grassroots fundraising efforts. And the many lessons I’ve learned from working in partnership with social movements in Guatemala over the years have been especially instructive in the time since Trump was elected.
At a time when folks in the U.S. are facing off against new extremes of state repression, racism, misogyny, xenophobia, I am inspired by the instructive resilience of communities in Guatemala that have been working for collective liberation for over 500 years. We have SO MUCH to learn from those who have long been working to build a new world based in justice, dignity, and respect for the earth.
By engaging with communities who are similarly impacted and creating opportunities for activists to share strategies, NISGUA strengthens and sharpens our social movements here at home. Movements in Guatemala have remained resilient and resourceful across the centuries. We, too, need to keep our sights on the long haul.
This is why I stay at the NISGUA table. And today I invite you to join me. Can you contribute to my match campaign today?
Whether you’re able to give $5 or $500 or nothing at all, I’d love talk to you about what NISGUA is up to and why I think our work is especially relevant in this political moment.
Thank you SO MUCH for your support, and for everything you do to create a more just world.
With love and immense gratitude,
