From AF National: On Wednesday, July 17th, Governor Ige of Hawaii made an emergency declaration that ordered the National Guard to mobilize against the Kānaka Maoli (Indigenous Hawaiian) protectors. These fearless protectors have stood strong the last number of days to protect the sacred Mauna Kea, and many years before this, against an extractive telescope project known as the Thirty Meter Telescope (TMT).
As veterans who believe deeply in the sovereignty of the Kānaka Maoli, and all indigenous people and nations, we know that this fight is critical to drawing a line in the sand for indigenous sovereignty -- and that it will take all of us to support them.
The first thing that you can do is donate to a critical group on the Mauna right now Hawaiʻi Unity and Liberation Institute (HULI), at this PayPal link:
The other thing we are asking you to support is sending our Post-9/11 veterans to Hawaii to stand in solidarity with our Kānaka Maoli friends. We have been asked by HULI to mobilize our members there for nonviolent direct-action training and action support, and we don't treat this request lightly.
Our Drop the MIC Campaign Co-Directors alongside two others About leaders are already on the ground. But four of our leaders is just a drop in the bucket compared to the kind of support we could provide if given the right resources.
This is not the first time we have confronted activated National Guard troops. We know from prior experience that having an organized group of veterans can have an important impact on how National Guard troops carry out their duties or choose not to... We are asking you to help us raise emergency funding so our members across the country can book flights directly to Hawaii and use their experience and skills in service of and in solidarity with our friends and Mauna Kea.
Please support with whatever donation you can give, because every little bit adds up -- again, if you can, please make a matching donation directly to HULI’s indigenous protectors.
We are specifically the San Francisco Bay Area Chapter of About Face, fundraising to send our own in tandem with other About Face veterans. As it stands, we are paying out of pocket to send ourselves considering the immediacy of the situation. We will go whether this fundraiser is met or not, but considering the costs with such an immediate trip, this fundraiser would help us significantly. Tickets for round trip range anywhere from 500-600 to send people within the coming days.
Reminder: If you haven't been invited to Mauna Kea by a person or organization on the ground, please don't come until there is an open call.
