On October 13, 2019, I ran my 24th marathon. Caroline, my girlfriend of 12 years, flew out with me to cheer me on.
I ran this marathon in Chicago, known for its flat course and fast times, in an attempt to achieve a long-time goal of qualifying to run the world’s oldest annual marathon (Boston).
In pursuit of this goal, I have completed 25 qualifying marathons around the world, including races in New York City, Chicago, Philadelphia, Burlington VT, Berlin, Washington DC, and on Long Island. Though the Boston goal has been elusive, over the years, I have gotten closer to qualifying. For many of these races, and even more training runs, Caroline has toed the starting line with me; in others, she has navigated each course to catch and cheer me.
I am 45 years old and need a time of 3:20:00 to qualify for the Boston Marathon.
In Chicago this year, after 13 years of marathoning, I ran a personal best (!) and completed the race in 3:20:02 (!!). According to my watch, my moving time was 3:19:59. I stopped once -- at mile 2.5 -- to kiss Caroline. (!!!%&#@!!)
Five days after the Chicago Marathon, Caroline and I were married on October 18, 2019 at City Hall in New York, on the 12th anniversary of our first date.
I ran my best. The kiss was worth it.
And I really want to run Boston.
