Mariko lived a beautiful life and passed away in 2015 after bravely battling multiple system atrophy (MSA) for nearly eight years. She loved her family and friends dearly and is extraordinarly missed by them every day.
MSA is a rare and fatal degenerative neurologic disorder. It is Parkinsonian in nature but with more widespread effects on the brain and body. It impacts both men and women, and onset usually occurs between the ages of 50 and early 60s. The cause of MSA is unclear, and there is currently no cure. The prognosis for this disease is poor; most patients pass away from the disease or its complications within six years of the diagnosis. The MSA Coalition is focused on facilitating and funding MSA research. We ask that donations are made in honor of Mariko's memory to aid in the discovery of a cure for this devastating disease.
