My name is Cory Garlock and I am running a 62-mile ultramarathon to fulfill my goal of funding the distribution of 5,000 antimalarial nets to save lives in high-risk areas.
Read on if you’d like to hear more about my story and my ‘why’.
In 2019, with the help of generous friends, family, and donors like you, we were able to send a young Kenyan girl, Mirriam Chepkoech, to high school. That tremendous community response inspired me to take on another ultramarathon challenge. My volunteer trip to Kenya in 2018 continues to inspire my fundraising efforts; many areas in Kenya are still struggling with Malaria.
Because Malaria was eradicated in the US, we don’t often think about the damage it causes. Consider some facts about the disease from UNICEF, the World Health Organization, and the Against Malaria Foundation:
• Malaria is a mosquito-borne infectious disease that results in flu, and in some cases, seizure, coma, and death
• Around 435,000 people die each year from the disease and 200+ million fall ill
• Over 300,000 of those deaths are children under the age of five - mostly in Sub-Saharan Africa
• The manufacture and distribution of a single mosquito net costs $2.
The good news: Malaria is PREVENTABLE.
The most effective means of preventing malaria is sleeping under a long-lasting insecticide net (LLIN). Mosquitos typically bite between 10 PM and 2 AM. If we can protect people in affected areas while they sleep at night, we can make an impact.
Here’s how we’re going to make a difference and save lives:
On October 16th 2020, I will run the Mines of Spain 100k ultramarathon with the help of a dedicated crew. I choose to use this run to raise funds for the Against Malaria Foundation (AMF), a nonprofit that provides netting to prevent the spread of malaria in Africa and other regions around the world. The AMF is a top-rated charity by GiveWell, The Life You Can Save, and Giving What We Can. With 100% of public donations going towards the purchase of netting, the Against Malaria Foundation has proven to be one of the most effective organizations in terms of saving human lives.
My goal is to raise $10,000 to provide 5,000 nets to those in need. At $2 per net, even small donations can make a huge difference! Thank you for your support and please consider sharing my story.
