For my birthday this year, I'm donating $1,000 to the Amazon rainforest. With brand new student debt, and endless waves of negativity in the world, this might seem like the time to turn down the volume and wait until the storms pass.
But any time in the past when I needed a break from the world, I turned to the trees.
And sitting here on the edge of a lifetime consuming resources to become more educated, see the world, have adventures; I remember a childhood among the redwoods. Standing on soil springy with dry leaves and moss and age, soaring columns covered in hair-fine bark that crumble into rich red loam. A cathedral forest breathing life into a speck of stardust.
I have never been to the Amazon. But I know that what these ancient forests have built will never be replaced in our lifetime.
Maybe you weren't planning on getting me a birthday present, or maybe you were looking for something to care about; one action to affect the tide of bad tidings.
