Mainframe Studios is proud to be a new noprofit model for providing permanent affordable workspace to artists of all disciplines. With only 3 of our 5 floors done so far, did you know that 105 creatives and nonprofit employees have been utilizing our 75 studio spaces?! And, nearly 70 of these are operating as small businesses.
A thriving arts community is key in attracting young professionals, new business and tourists. We believe developing proper infrastructure for individual artists is as important as creating a world-class art center, sculpture park, opera or theater performance venues. Des Moines is fortunate to have all of these, and we look forward to showing other cities why giving equal attention to creative professionals benefits communities in profound ways.
While our nonprofit continues to fundraise to finish our project and add another 110 studios, we want to make the community aware that our artists need them.
Many have experienced our First Friday festivities when the public comes experience art in its many forms. Widespread cancelation of events like ours, along with workshops, commissions and general support is severely impacting the livelihood of our artists. As the uncertainty that comes with the spread of COVID-19 persists, many artists aren’t sure how they’re going to pay for studio rent this month and in the months to come.
They are responding to resources available to them during this time and exploring ways to remain viable. However, there is much uncertainty in these sources. As many of you know, our artists have incredible talent and deserve the opportunity to continue creating. Our artists rely on events, sales and commissions to exist and contribute to our greater community by being economically sound.
Please consider how to continue your patronage and contributing to this important fund.
Mainframe Studios is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. 100% of contributions will go to artists who have lost income due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This emergency fund will help our artists in need with rent, utilities and other expenses so that they can continue creating and have a future to look forward to. The amount provided to artists will be determined by evaluating how much funding is available, how much of an artist's total income has been lost, their rent and utility costs, and how many artists apply for this support. We are enlisting a panel to review applications and a corresponding matrix for determining need. Amounts given will range from $100 to $1500.
If contributing by check is preferred, please send to Mainframe Studios c/o Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines, 1915 Grand Ave DSM 50309.
All income and payments related to this fund (and all Mainframe Studios accounting needs) are processed through Greater Des Moines Community Foundation.
Since Mainframe Studios is still fundraising to complete renovations that will enable it to achieve a financially-self sustaining business model, it does not have reserves to offer artists breaks in rent or payment deferments. The organization is doing all it can to explore resources available and promote its artists. Contributions here help our artists retain their creative practice during these uncertain times. We are incredibly grateful for our artists and your contributions.
