Recent events and update on Covid19
Thanks to your generous donations, and before the Covid19 crisis changed our lives and the World, we were able to send funds to the School under the Tree for food and new books this semester. Nasaru opened shortly after Christmas with these smiling new faces and a new teacher from Western Kenya named Juliet.
As the Covid19 pandemic unraveled worldwide, SHE has been providing information on prevention to the Lenkobei Maasai community leaders, teachers and to local health and crisis management groups. SHE is supporting local women to make their masks and we are partnering with a local Foundation to ensure safe delivery of food and water to the Lenkobei Maasai community so they can #stayhome.
At the International level, SHE is collaborating with the Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation for Health and Relief in Taiwan to facilitate donations of medical supplies and Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) to Spain, to our partners at the Kenyan Red Cross Society and to other Red Cross / Red Crescent societies in Africa.
The Tzu Chi Foundation in Taiwan has been generously sending donations of rapid test kits and PPE to +70 countries, including the first and worst affected countries impacted by Covid19, China Italy, Spain and USA.
Update on the construction of the Nasaru School
SHE secured funding from a German Family Education Foundation to construct the School for the Lenkobei Maasai community in collaboration with the Kenyan Red Cross Society (KRCS).
We are very close to starting and we are pushing hard to advance the construction of two classrooms before Covid19 reaches this community. During the peak of the Covid19, health workers could use the classrooms as an “isolation center” to take care of the sick. This could be critical to save lives in that remote area.
While we all #stayhome we want to invite you to be part of the solution in the front line, and consider making a generous donation so we can keep supporting this vulnerable Maasai Community, protect health workers, and advance the construction of the school during the Covid19 crisis.
Tax deductible donations can be on this page or by writing a check to SHE Foundation and mailing it to P.O. Box 1733, Leander, Texas 78646.
Join SHE Foundation in making dreams come true for the children of the Lenkobei Maasai Community!
We invite you to help protect the childhood of these Maasai children in Kenya and make their education dreams a reality. SHE Foundation – Sustainability Health Education – was formed to support remote and underserved communities to invest in children's education, community health, and to build climate resiliency while conserving their culture and natural ecosystems.
We hope to raise $100,000 to support the establishment of a climate-resilient school that meets the education needs of hundreds of Maasai children in Lenkobei, Kenya. Donations are 100% tax deductible.
Previously nomadic, the Lenkobei Maasai Community has taken up residence in a very remote area of the Rift Valley in Kenya, because of the strain recurrent droughts have put on their natural resources, ecosystems, and livelihoods. The closest town with electricity grid, water pipelines, schools, and medical facilities is located more than 18 miles (30 km away; an hour’s drive over a dirty, bumpy road).
SHE members have been collaborating with this Maasai community to foster health, food security, nutrition, gender equality, and women and girls’ education for several years. Girls who go to school can escape early marriage (as early as 12-years-old), from unwanted sexual relations, HIV infection risks, early pregnancies and forced labor and household work, including fetching and carrying large loads of water and wood from long distances. Increasing desertification in the Sub-Sahara is severely compounding the poverty of this community. That’s why our initiative also embraces climate resilience to provide a sustainable way forward for this drastically underserved community.
“School Under the Tree”
A dedicated teacher and community driver, Josiah Maninah, started a school in this Maasai Community under a tree and in a rented tin shack, which also serves as a community church. Despite the lack of facilities, the School Under the Tree has done a great job promoting girls’ education and access for poor kids and orphans. Since 2015, the school has grown from 14 to 81 students. However, the community desperately needs a permanent school to support the overwhelming need for education.
A German family education foundation has generously invested in the construction of the first phase of the "School Under the Tree" in collaboration with the Kenya Red Cross. The school has been designed in collaboration with the Maasai Community and draws on traditional and cultural knowledge and building materials. The goal is for the school to be in harmony with the surrounding ecosystem as well as support broader ecotourism community efforts. Architects from Italy and the United States are volunteering their time and expertise to design a climate-resilient school with natural ventilation, a water capture system, solar power, ecological toilets and protection from wildlife.
