Brian and I became close friends when we worked on Barack Obama's first presidential campaign. (See us in the first photo hanging out with a couple of quadripeds in NH.) Brian and Sandra attended Tanya's and my wedding. We all made fast friends.
Imagine my surprise when Brian told me in early 2018 that he'd been diagnosed with ALS. He was only 37 and just turned 40 on October 9. Briefly, in case you don't know (I did not), ALS causes paralysis; it robs victims of the ability to speak, eat, move, and breathe. ALS is always fatal, typically within 3 to 5 years.
ALS picked a battle with a born fighter. Brian does not take "you can't do that" for an answer, and so Brian said to ALS, "I'm going to fight you until I beat you." Here's his story.
Brian harnessed every lesson he'd ever learned in an all-out assault on ALS: Creating opportunities and support for patients, raising awareness through traditional and social media, leveraging support from the man he helped elect (and worked for as) President; creating a legislative caucus and testifying before Congress.
All this fighting has brought Brian to today, a day when we finally see a ray of hope in a treatment that may be targeted like a laser at Brian's ALS the way Brian has been laser focused on beating ALS.
