ALS, also know as Lou Gherig's Disease, is a horrific progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. It leads to muscle weakness and failure, and inability to speak, eat and/or breathe. In later stages, ALS paralyzes the muscles you use to breathe and is often fatal, and while research has helped doctors and scientists understand more, there is no cure for this disease.
Liz's uncle, Todd Duffy, had a long and great career as a cop and detective. As an active outdoorsman and mountain biker, he was looking forward to enjoying these things in his retirement. Unfortunately he has been suffering terribly with ALS for the past several years and can no longer enjoy any of those things, however, his spirit, his heart and outlook remain strong. In lieu of a gift registry, donations to the ALS Association to help the fight to treat and cure ALS for Uncle Todd and so many others who fight this awful disease, are appreciated!
