I am mother of 3 lovely small people, wife to the coolest and best auto mechanic in Puerto Rico, home educator, part-time English teacher, proud Puerto Rican, believer in quality and free education for all and last but not least lover of books and the stories they share. Like many moms, having a sound relationship with my kids and helping them navigate through these uneasy times is tough; my most advantageous attempt has been, hands down, reading with them. Delving into enduring or evil characters, eventful conflicts and uncomplicated yet valuable lessons that echo unto a higher reality we can converse about, works for me.
This love of reading to my own inspired me to motivate other moms and dads to do the same. Since 1993, both Spanish and English have been the official languages of Puerto Rico yet to this day far too many Puerto Ricans are not fully fluent. English literacy and language skills are in dire need in this island and helping parents would be the greatest benefit for the younger generation. Literacy Partners' amazing work with families in New York City opened my eyes to the incredible possibilities of attending to literacy and language skills to low-income families and English language learners. Literacy Partners encouraged me. I want to help them with their goal in New York City while I continue to seek for ways to help others here in the island.
I will work hard to raise donations for Literacy Partners of New York. I will continue reading to my kids, ignite the love of reading to my students and find opportunities to help families with their English literacy and language skills. I will do this and in November I will also run 26.2 miles in the NYRR New York City Marathon.
Please donate if you can. Read, because you must.
