With your help, Literacy Partners will launch a new program in 2019 to help New York City adults with extremely low literacy skills to learn to read.
We will target adults (of all ages) with severe reading deficits to overcome a lifetime of challenges in learning to read. The illiteracy stems from different causes - un- or mis-diagnosed learning disabilities, brain injuries or deficits, or some other trauma that has prevented them from learning to read.
As you can imagine, severely low literacy levels have a huge impact on the quality of life of an individual and their family, their ability to navigate basic life in NYC, and their ability to effectively advocate for themselves and their families. By supporting this campaign you offer a hand up to these students and their families.
With this pilot program we plan to serve 10-15 students for a 9 week session - gifts of all sizes are welcome and underwrite costs such as:
$500 - Trains 20 volunteer tutors how to provide phonics-based reading and writing instruction.
$250 - Supports a licensed social worker to be on site for an evening to attend to student needs.
$100 - Provides a class set of City Stories - a book of fiction for adult beginning readers.
$50 - Provides 1 magnetic journal, a personalized binder, word cards, short vowel and digraph handouts, and additional class materials for a student to learn how to connect letters with sounds.
$25 - Purchases healthy, high-energy snacks for our students.
