This year I decided to do a short and sweet, level (as in "level ground" - no hills!) event for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS.)
I am doing the 5K at the Giants Race. This event takes place in S.F. along the waterfront, and ends at the S.F. Giants' Stadium. My knees are already thanking me!
A little history: I have had lymphoma 4 times, the last time including 2 types of white blood cell cancer at once. Thank the Big G, I have been well now for 12 years following that nastiest of bouts.
Some of the treatments I have had were funded by LLS in their trial stages - including Intereferon in 1987-88 and Retuxan, which I had in 2006-7. Expert doctors with whom I have consulted - on the cutting edge of cancer research - received LLS funding to continue their important work. Often, blood cancer treatments are found to help in the treatment of other types of cancer, too.
All of the funds raised for LLS go to research for cures, treatments and patient services. These services include educational conferences, support groups and events for families and friends dealing with a blood cancer. I still volunteer with First Connection, a match-making service for those recently diagnosed who want to talk with someone who's been through a similar diagnosis. LLS has been a great community for me over the years.
