Everyone remembers that day: where they were, who they were with, and perhaps even what they were wearing. My phone buzzed. It was a text from my Dad, “At Fenway, loud bang! Check the news-we don’t know what’s going on.” I was only an hour from the Copley Square finish line at the time of the 2013 Boston Marathon, but it seemed like much farther. I felt helpless as I wanted to be there with my family and friends. It was the third Monday in April when the world watched as our city, Boston, changed forever.
The memories of those lost will never be forgotten. They have become my inspiration to run and to live. The lives and stories they left behind are reminders of how special life is. One was Lingzi Lu. Lingzi was a student, an inspiration and a humble friend to those she went to school with at Boston University. She was an ‘optimistic and happy young woman who loved life, loved people, and appreciated different cultures’. This is the person who I am proud and lucky enough to run the 2018 Boston Marathon for. Under her foundation, which honors the examples set by Lingzi, I will get to learn more about the person she was and what she left behind.
The Boston Marathon to me means many things. From an early age I’ve always seen the marathon as a platform for those who dream big and embrace opportunity. Some of my earliest memories are from watching the race from the streets of Newton, and running on sidewalks holding out orange slices to runners. It was my introduction to running just like it was my introduction to culture. What I saw was a city that invited people from all over the world to come run in its streets, all with different goals and purposes for taking on the challenge. What I hope to accomplish in my marathon journey is to train with the same values that Lingzi had and fundraise in her name. I’d like to build bridges between community and culture, all while spreading my love of running :)
