The Lowery Institute's mission is to provide a platform for citizens of every walk of life to learn the important nonviolent advocacy principles. Central to this mission is a push to provide future leaders and “Change Agents” with opportunities to explore the moral, ethical, and theological imperatives for justice and human rights for all people. Our pillars are: Social Justice, Education, Civil & Human Rights, and Community Health.
In 2019, our Change Agents served over 13,000 hours working tirelessly to fulfill the Lowery Institute’s mission. We are proud to share our Change Agents accomplishments and other initiatives carried out this year as students continued their individual academic journeys.
Their work included:Sharing social justice principles with over 2,438 students Instructing 650 school-aged students in peace building through our non-violence curriculum Registering and transporting 300 college students to the polls for early voting Producing 14 podcasts through The Change Writing over 33 blogs, on various relevant social justice topics Conducting an educational forum on Black HIV/AIDS Day Co-hosting Tarana Burke’s #MeToo HBCU College Tour for the Atlanta University Center
Additionally, our Change Agents were awarded $5,000 for social justice initiatives; received $12,000 in stipends, and earned 5 internships; all while actively serving. One of our most impactful efforts to combat food insecurity is Mimi’s Pantry. This school year, with support from our friends and partners, we distributed more than 40,000 pounds of food to undergraduate students without a full meal plan.
As we navigate how to engage with our Change Agents during this time, your donations will help to extend our reach and create a lasting impact in the “beloved community” Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. so eloquently described, we look forward to your participation and pledge of support.
Your contribution in any amount to the Lowery Institute is key to the expansion of our fundamental programs and continuing Joseph and Evelyn Lowery's legacy of advocacy. Help us to make a difference in our communities locally, nationally, and internationally for the common good.
