Lift 2 Beat Blood Cancer started in 2017. I had recently been diagnosed with MGUS (early Multiple Myeloma) in September 2016 and I wanted to feel in control when so much was out of my control. So I set out to bring awareness and raise funds for all types of blood cancer.
In 2017 I committed to lifting 10,000 lbs for each of the 137 types of blood cancer in 250 days. That’s 1,370,000 lbs. It wasn’t easy, but I finished on September 25th, 2017 exactly one year from my diagnosis.
Along the way, I had an amazing cheerleaders as I lifted to complete my challenge. So when 2018 came around 150+ friend from around the globe (Australia, Sweden, Iceland, Germany, Switzerland, the US, Scotland, England to name a few) jumped on the bandwagon. We lifted like beasts and knocked it out of the park.
Half way through the 2018 challenge, I found out that my MGUS had progressed to Multiple Myeloma and that I would start treatment to prepare for a stem cell transplant in December. I lifted up until July and then took to the sidelines to cheer everyone on! The team knocked it out of the park. (as of today - August 2020, I am healthy and in remission)
After finishing the 2018 challenge, even more people asked to join along. So in January 2019 we kicked off our 3rd year and over 225 people joined along.
We took a break this year from the full challenge and in hindsight I think it worked out well with not having easy access to gyms due to COVID. However, we wanted to do something.
We have opted to commit to lifting as much as we each can with the equipment that we have access to over a weekend in September. The 24th - 27th to be exact.
All in all we have raised over $30,000 to help find a cure for blood cancer and we aren’t going to stop lifting and raising money!
