This past summer (2018), Appalachian State University's Construction and Design class built LIFE Village's first tiny home. We set a goal to raise $10,000 toward the cost of building materials and appliances needed to complete this project. With generous donations from local companies and our supporter's financial gifts, this first tiny home project with our local university (ASU) was a success!!
We now have the opportunity to dive deeper into the architectural design and planning of the LIFE Village community. We have contracted again with Appalachian State University for the Fall semester of 2018 to be the focus of the IDEXlab Sponsored Studio within the Department of Sustainable Technology and the Built Environment. In this class, students under the supervision of instructor's Jason Miller and Chelsea Helms, will research and design innovative, appropriate housing for residents of LIFE Village with an ASD diagnosis and/or related life challenges. At the end of the semester, the specialized deliverables will include a feasibility study, presentation materials, renderings, schematics and physical models of four design options. By the end of the year, LIFE Village will have a huge step forward in the planning process for our community that will be home to not only adults with life challenges, but also folks who are seeking affordable housing in the Boone, NC area. This is a very exciting opportunity for us that we could not pass up!!
With that said, we again call on our supporters for help. The cost to secure this covenanted opportunity with ASU is $5,000 per semester. This is a bargain considering what these deliverables would cost if we went directly to an architectural firm. We love the idea of working closely with our local university and reaping the benefits of challenging the creative young minds of these brilliant students. It is truly a WIN-WIN and we feel so lucky to have this opportunity available to us!!
The icing on the cake is the added opportunity to be the focus of the US Department of Energy Solar Decathlon! The Solar Decathlon is a collegiate competition challenging student teams to innovate highly energy efficient buildings that demonstrate excellence in design, performance, and construct-ability, and use solar technologies to meet their energy needs. The IDEXlab class will be submitting one of the LIFE Village designs when they apply for this competition in December. We will know by the first of the year if we are selected!!
PLEASE HELP US MAKE THIS DREAM TO PROVIDE A PURPOSEFUL LIFE FOR ADULTS WITH LIFE CHALLENGES A REALITY!! WE THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROUS DONATIONS, YOUR POSITIVE THOUGHTS, AND YOUR CONTINUED PRAYERS!!
