My name is David and I will be running the Colfax 5K this upcoming May, while also raising money for The Center on Colfax which is one of the largest LGBTQ community centers in the Rocky Mountain region. Their overall mission is to engage, empower, enrich, and advance the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer community of Colorado. In addition to giving voice for Colorado's LGBTQ community, they play a pivotal role in statewide initiatives to reduce harassment and discrimination.
The reason as to why I chose this organization to spend my time collecting funds for was because the services they provide for LGBTQ members. These services include HIV/STI screenings, assistance with insurance, mental health counseling, social support, fitness classes, technology, an access to a library and more! They also provide a safe space for LGBTQ youth (11-21) to help develop their identities by providing affirming support (counseling, life skills, health services and support groups), fun, and a space to express their authentic selves. In addition to youth, they also provide a space for older adults (50+) in the LGBTQ community by helping them find social support and build community amongst each other.
As many of my friends know, supporting these organizations in current political/social climate is essential to ensuring the safety and support of members within the LGBTQ+ community. Allyship does not only mean showing up when it's convenient during Pride season, but also actively engaging with the community in order to help build each other up.
Although my goal is high, that does not mean it's impossible. I hope you are able to donate while I train for my first 5K, while also helping to support this organization. Remember that every cent and dollar count. The Colfax 5K will take place on Saturday, May 16th so we have time to make some incredible change!
Sending love and positive vibes to you all. Make it a great day!
