New York is a special place, and I have wanted to run the New York City Marathon for almost as long as I got this crazy marathon bug! This year, I have that opportunity, and will be running on behalf of Let Me Run.
LetMeRun.org is a wellness program for 3rd-8th grade boys. You may recall that I have an 8th grader at Waddell Language Academy, and he participated in a Let Me Run program last fall. While running certainly takes physical strength and endurance, it is the mental, emotional, and social aspects of running that I love. And Let Me Run is all about that! This program encourages positive emotional, social, and physical development of boys at an age when they need it the most.
I am not a boy. But I am a mom of boys, and I can relate to some startling facts:
1. Boys are 2x more likely than girls to be suspended, and 3x more likely to be expelled, from school.
2. Boys are 4x more likely than girls to be diagnosed with ADHD.
3. Depression in boys frequently manifests itself in violence or anger.
4. Four or more boys commit suicide every day.
We can speculate on the various reasons for this, but I believe that providing a safe and supportive environment is instrumental in combatting these grim statistics. As a new Let Me Run Coach, I am excited to be part of the change!
Therefore, before even starting my training for NYC, I am starting my mission to fund raise for Let Me Run. By supporting Let Me Run, you are supporting a positive cause that will help create confident, compassionate young men in our community.
And, you will be supporting my dream… so Thank You!
Let Me Run is proud to be an official charity partner of the 2019 TCS New York City Marathon.
Following the success of our 2017 and 2018 Charity Runner teams that raised over $100,000 for Let Me Run, we're excited for the incredible opportunity to participate again this year as a 2019 TCS New York City Marathon Charity Partner. Through our 10 devoted Charity Runners, we can raise awareness and funds for our program, which will enable us to continue to expand our reach across the country and fulfill our mission. We’re working to inspire all boys through the power of running to be courageous enough to be themselves, build healthy relationships, and live active lifestyles.
Our Let Me Run Charity Runners will have the unique opportunity — and responsibility — to provide support, inspiration, and leadership for our boys, the next generation of men.
Like the New York Road Runners Club, Let Me Run believes, ”running takes your body, mind, and spirit to a better place. The simple act of putting one foot in front of the other and moving forward can make you healthier, happier, and more confident.” That’s why running is such a powerful vehicle for the holistic lessons in our curriculum.
In addition to running, generosity has also been proven to increase health and happiness. Let Me Run's Charity Runners can combine the power of running and generosity to become a force for positive change in our society, who support the emotional, social and physical health of our boys.
