Leigh recently started opening up about her struggles as a black woman in the music industry. She has faced racism and discrimination for 9 years now, but like she said in her recent IGTV, with her struggles also came personal growth, and her strong conviction that a change is much needed. She is not the only artist who suffered, and still suffers, in an industry that quite literally wouldn't exist without black culture, and yet keeps on mistreating black artists because they're not deemed "marketable enough".
We decided, following the recent events, to choose a charity that not only supports and helps black artists of all fields and areas, but also supports the #blacklivesmatter movement.
Black Girls Rock has an excellent initiative to help and support young black women in various fields through their classes and workshops, and honours black female artists' success at their annual award show. Leigh has expressed her admiration for this organisation many times in the past, so it only seemed fitting to start another birthday fundraiser for this incredible project.
Please help us shape the industry and world of tomorrow into a more diverse and accepting one, a world in which young black girls will no longer have to hear that they must work "ten times harder" in order to make it.
Every donation counts!
