I joined the Work With Dignity commitee of the Southern Maine Worker's Center early 2018. I read about a story telling event they were hosting at Local Sprouts in support of Earned Paid Sick Days on facebook. The state had been doing nothing to support care givers, and the administration at the time had been openly hostile to MaineCare budgets. Earned Paid Sick Days felt like something tangible that could really help a lot of direct care workers. I knew that once Portland had EPSD, it would start to spread and help more folx. Now, we have a statewide Paid Time Off law that has the potential to be crafted and amended into something really powerful.
The Southern Maine Worker's Center is a really special place that is near and dear to my heart. They have given me opportunities to raise up my community, learn from leaders in social justice, and grow as a person.
To give back to this amazing group of people, I am participating in this years Karaoke Fundraiser! I'll be singing about standing up and sticking it to the man while helping out a great cause!
