The 2020 Leadership Erie County Class has chosen to raise $15,000 for Stein Hospice to purchase Virtual Reality kits to be used with their patients, families and caregivers.
These kits will be used with the patients, families, and caregivers that utilize Stein Hospice's services. Using Virtual Reality with hospice patients is on the cutting edge of medical technology. Recent studies show that Virtual Reality travels some of the same brain pathways as pain and can help alleviate pain and relax patients.
Stein Hospice currently owns four RoVR kits but would like to expand the program to include one for each of the counties that they serve for patients that are receiving their services at home or in a skilled nursing facility along with kits that would stay at their main facility in Sandusky.
Each kit, priced at $2,500 each, comes with six different virtual realty experiences. These include an Honor Flight to Washington D.C., a trip to the Grand Canyon, a Big Band Era experience, and many more. The most popular experience is a tour of Kelleys Island. Staff at Stein Hospice enhance the experience by placing the patient's feet into a shallo tub of sand and set a fan on low to simulate walking on the beach and experiencing the breeze off the lake.
Our class had raised over $5,000 for the project already, but then the COVID-19 pandemic hit and our main sources of raising funds were impossible.
Please help us reach our GoFundMe goal of $10,000 to virtually raise the funds for this virtual experience for Stein Hospice patients.
