My name is Given Sandamela, and I live in small village Schoemansdal, Mpumalanga, in South Africa. I am in Grade 10 in Lugebhuta High School in Schoemansdal. Additionally, I am a part of an amazing program, Imagine Scholar, that supports high school students from grade 8-12, with necessary resources and new opportunities so they may thrive toward a brighter future.
With aid from Image scholar, I discovered a hidden passion I had: the environment. I have been cultivating this interest with a group of students who are also passionate about the environment from Imagine Scholar, the Green Team. I am exceptionally passionate about plants and trees, and how they have an incredible impact stabilizing the climate of the planet, providing food and habitat for diverse animal species. I believe that if we can learn from nature, we can start moving towards a greener and more sustainable world, free from most of the challenges we are encountering, like deforestation. I believe planting trees is an effective way to reconnect with nature, for a habitable and healthier environment for human beings and animals.
Currently, I am working on a project to plant trees in my community, Schoemansdal, and a school ,Ntimandze secondary school, which is also facing a similary problem like my community. The problem I identified in my community is that the majority of the people have not planted trees because they can not afford them, some don’t know how to plant trees, and most cut down their trees without any positive motive. Mtimanze secondary school is also facing a similar problem, hence I will aso be planing trees there.
The first part of my journey towards solving this problem will be to plant 10 trees in Mtimanze secondary school and my community, as a prototype and an alternative to get experience for bigger and better follow up projects in the future, like delivering a presentation at the school and my community, about the impact of trees explaining why we should conserve them. I am working towards a deadline to raise $46 and to plant the trees before 25 August, 2018. I believe that, by planting the trees, I'll be aking the world a better place.
Thank you for your time and support! I would sincerely appreciate your help making the world a greener place.
