Supporting Children & Families in Times of Crisis
Learning Empowered, formerly UMCM Suncoast, offers programs and services to children and families who experience intergenerational trauma as a result of pervasive poverty, institutional racism and various crippling factors related to those circumstances that adversely impact their lives.
Research shows that trauma during childhood directly impacts health, future employment and chances of ending up below the federal poverty line. The more traumatic situations the child experiences, the greater the odds. But what do we know about the effects of a global pandemic on a child already at risk of trauma? We are unsure of the outcomes that lie ahead, which is why our programs and services are so important both now and as we recover from COVID-19.
Currently, we have pivoted all our programs to ensure that the effects of the COVID-19 crisis are minimized to the already vulnerable population we serve.
We have put resources into creating virtual lessons and educational packets that parents can pick-up at one of our car circle drive-thrus in order to provide learning continuity for the children we serve. We moved all our adult learning programs including our citizenship classes to an online format to enusre our students stay on track in their naturalization process. We have also put our Family Engagement Services into overdrive to ensure families are receiving needed emergency services.
Shifting programs is not only time consuming but takes funds that were originally earmarked to go directly into services. Your donation, of any amount, can help us offset these costs to ensure that our programs remain whole and focused on those who need assistance now and in the days to come.
