I'm going to learn Chinese (Mandarin specifically) every single day to raise suicide awareness and maybe even save a life. Btw, I'm just as confused about this logic as you are, but hear me out...
A suicide is not merely an individual tragedy, but it can destroy the foundation of a family, and can leave the friends wondering, "why didn't they just talk to me about it?" There is clearly a taboo in this society about mental health and suicide...and not being able to talk about it openly simply makes it worse. BUT there are some ways to help, especially in these troubling times.
Prior to Covid, there was already a loneliness epidemic in the United States! In 2018, almost 50,000 people died due to suicide, which is the 10th leading cause of death in America.
Now combine that with Covid, and suicide rates and feelings of loneliness/isolation are at an all time high. But there is another problem, many Suicide Prevention center are seeing their funding cut to a point that many may close down.
So when someone calls about a crisis or to talk about their thoughts of suicide, there is a chance that soon very few places will actually be able to pick up actually listen.
We can stop this from happening together, but only through learning a language. Ok, maybe not only. Samaritans is a suicide prevention hotline, and is an excellent organization that prioritizes human life and allows for every voice to be heard even when no one else wants to listen. But its funding is also being cut due to Covid, and people rely on the Samaritans just to get through the day!
I just hope dedicating myself to a language will spread some kind of awareness during Suicide Awareness Month.
I have noticed that many people from China come to the United States for a better life, but are sometimes met with racism, social and sytemic (especially after the spread of Covid-19). It may feel a little heart warming to have a random white guy put in the effort to show some appreciation for another culture. I could be wrong but hopefully me knowing some Chinese will put a smile on someone's face. Anyway, hopefully you can also pick up a new language or do something else to raise suicide awareness. Thoughts of suicide can effect anyone, but we can raise awareness to make sure those people are heard.
If you want to make a donation to help Samaritans continue to raise education and help people effected by suicide you can do so here https://samaritansnyc.org/
