Community gardens are vital-- they create space for people to gather, add beauty and community to neighborhoods, allow people without land to grow their own food, improve food security, and increase access to fresh produce. And Roanoke has FOUR amazing community gardens!
In late 2019, after 11 years in operation, the Roanoke Community Garden Association had to make the difficult decision to close its doors due to the financial challenges of running a small non-profit.
LEAP couldn’t watch the community gardens fade away. We took a LEAP of faith and committed to taking on the ongoing operation of the community gardens.
To celebrate Leap Year and to support LEAP in our first year as stewards of the community gardens in Roanoke, please help us raise $10,000 in 10 days.
From February 19 to February 29, we are calling all gardeners, foodies, farmers, chefs, tree huggers, dirt lovers, home cooks, families, neighbors, nutritionists, health care workers, social workers, teachers, and firefighters to say yes! To help us ensure that more kids and adults have the opportunity to get their hands dirty, reconnect with their food and neighbors, and shout for joy when eating a sun-kissed garden grown tomato or freshly dug carrot. To help us grow and share the love for locally grown food.
